Payne Announcement Expected Today
Michigan State already boasts a Top 25 recruiting class with current commitments of dynamic Detroit (Mich.) Pershing guard Keith Appling, versatile 6-foot-9 Eaton Rapids (Mich.) inside-outside threat Alex Gauna, and 6-foot-7 sharpshooter Russell Byrd.
This evening, the Spartans discover if they have added Dayton (Ohio) Jefferson star Adreian Payne to an already strong recruiting class.
The 6-foot-10, 215-pound Ohioan is ranked No. 2 player in Ohio, the No. 4 center, and the No. 20 overall player in the Class of 2010 by Rivals.com.
Payne had dozens of scholarship offers from some of the top basketball programs in the country. The dynamic inside-outside scoring threat narrowed that list to five finalists after he finished playing in his final year on the summer basketball circuit.
Payne settled on Michigan State, Kentucky, Arizona, West Virginia, and Kansas as his finalists. The Jefferson standout took official visits to each institution with the exception of Kansas, who was supposed to get a visit from Payne last weekend. The Ohioan cancelled that visit and began the deliberation process last weekend with the intent of choosing a school prior to the start of the early signing period on November 11.
