Morrissey on the Spartan board
One of the players that Head Coach Mark Dantonio and the Spartan staff are taking a serious look at for the class of 2014 is 6-foot-3, 185-pound safety prospect Matt Morrissey of Stevenson High School in Illinois. SpartanMag.com has the latest details on his recruitment.
As many already know, Morrissey has strong ties to Michigan State University. Not only did his father, Jim, star at linebacker for the Green and White back in the 1980's, but his mother, Amy, is also is a graduate of Michigan State. His sister, Anna, currently plays on the Spartan Women's Basketball team.
Morrissey had a very strong junior campaign for Stevenson High school. He racked up 62 tackles form his safety spot on defensive and had 33 catches for 563-yards on offense. That performance not only got him numerous post-season offers, but also has helped him land 2 scholarship offers.
"As of now I have offers from Toledo and Illinois, Morrissey stated. "Coaches from Michigan State, Vanderbilt, Minnesota, Central Michigan and Illinois have all been by school the last 2 weeks. Coach Roushar is my recruiter from Michigan State"
Morrissey is very familiar with Michigan State University due to his family connections, but the staff will certainly look to have him on campus in the coming months so they can build more rapport with him. As far as potential college visits coming up, Morrissey indicated a lot will depend on his basketball schedule. Morrissey is a key member for the Patriots squad and is known for his defense and rebounding.
"I do not have any plans on visiting any schools soon because I am in the middle of my basketball season," he said.
The Spartans will have several junior days this winter and Morrissey will certainly be invited up to East Lansing to attend. We asked him about his thoughts on the Spartans and what he is looking for in a college.
"The Spartans have a great program and I have always like Michigan State, he stated. "I am looking for the right fit when it comes to college. I am going to pay attention to the academics, the football program and the overall school atmosphere."
The Spartans already have one legacy recruit committed for the class of 2014 in linebacker Byron Bullough. If the staff offers Morrissey they could have a great chance of adding him to the mix as well. Having a Morrissey and Bullough on the field at the same time would certainly bring back a lot of memories. From 1984 through 1990 you could rarely attend a Spartan game without hearing "tackle by Morrissey" or "tackle by Bullough" stated numerous times over the loudspeaker.
SpartanMag.com will continue to follow the recruitment of Morrissey in the coming weeks. It is very possible his offer list will expand in January as more coaches make their way through Stevenson High.
