Appling named MVP of the GR Storm Classic
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich - Michigan State commitment Keith Appling is getting use to finding his way to the winner's circle this spring. After leading his Detroit Pershing team to the Class A state championship three weeks ago, Appling led his AAU team, the Michigan Mustangs, to the 17-under title at the Grand Rapids Storm Classic this weekend.
Appling and his teammates dominated the tournament and took home the hardware after a 65-57 win against the tournament host in Sunday's title game.
Appling turned in a complete game for the Mustangs as he scored 16 points, dished out six assists, came away with three steals and even blocked a shot. Taking advantage of a sizable height advantage against the Storm's undersized guards, Appling consistently took the ball to the hole as the Storm jumped out to a 14-6 lead. Appling had a hand, either an assist or scored the points, in 12 of those first 14 points.
For his effort, Appling was named the MVP of the 2009 Grand Rapids Storm Classic.
"Keith played outstanding," said Mustangs 17-under coach Vonn Mayfield, who is also the varsity coach at Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills and was subbing for Mustang coach Norm Oden who was out of town on business last weekend. "He took care of the ball, didn't turn it over, got the shots that we needed to get, controlled the team, ran the floor, just an outstanding player, I haven't seen too many like him."
