Appling and Oliver renew rivalry at Breslin Center
EAST LANSING - They have been teammates for the past two months on the Michigan Mustang 17-and-under team, but three months ago Detroit Pershing's Keith Appling and Kalamazoo Central's Devin Oliver met on the floor of the Breslin Center for one of the most memorable Class A state final games in Michigan prep basketball history.
In that game Appling scored an all-class state record 49 points in leading his Doughboys to a 90-73 victory.
Friday evening the two teammates and rivals met again on the floor of the Breslin Center during one of the more intriguing first-day match-ups at the annual Tom Izzo Spartan Shootout.
While the game was close for most of the way, Appling's Doughboys came out ahead once again as Pershing defeated Kalamazoo Central 50-41 in a game that brought back memories for both players.
"Yeah, it brought back memories of a heated, competitive game," Appling said. "We just wanted to play hard and come out with the 'W' once again. We are AAU teammates and we talk a lot about the state championship game. We were trying to get right back at them."
