October 27, 2009 North Carolina's best player is a major question mark. The Tar Heels still have enough talent to win the Atlantic Coast Conference. For the second straight year, coach Sylvia Hatchell's team is the preseason pick to win the ACC's women's basketball title, despite the uncertain status of Jessica Breland, who's been out since she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates hears the criticism. He hears it on campus when he's going to class, and when he walks off the field after a loss. The Tar Heels are 4-3 overall, 0-3 in the ACC, and Yates is becoming the prime target of fans' discontent since his numbers are down from the past two years. But the third-year starter said he also has learned how to block out all that noise and to not take any of it personal. There are battles. And then there are battles. The battle UNC senior forward Jessica Breland has waged against Hodgkin's lymphoma during the last five months overshadows anything that will take place on the 94-foot hardwood floors in arenas across the ACC this season. Breland's status for the season is uncertain, according to UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell, but that didn't prevent Breland from being named to the preseason All-ACC team. When the college football season opened back in August, the odds were high that East Carolina, N.C. State, North Carolina and Wake Forest would be receiving bowl bids come early December. With five games left and North Carolina still three victories shy of qualifying for a bowl game, the Tar Heels' players said there's no reason to panic about the postseason. Into the second half of their third seasons, it's become clear that N.C. State's Tom O'Brien and North Carolina's Butch Davis have slipped into dangerous patterns. North Carolina women's basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell can usually predict the preseason order of ACC conference teams with great accuracy -- give or take a few positions. North Carolina was still trying yesterday to overcome last week's stunning collapse against Florida State, while also getting ready for one of its toughest games of the season. Shell-shocked UNC will play at Virginia Tech in its second consecutive Thursday night game and the first of three remaining road games. Coach Butch Davis said that the playing date has led to another unusual and demanding week for his team, which is winless in ACC play. |
