October 29, 2009 A bye week fell at an opportune time for No. 14 Virginia Tech, giving the Hokies a chance to get their loss to No. 11 Georgia Tech out of their heads. The game almost two weeks ago took the Hokies (5-2, 3-1 ACC) out of contention for the national championship, but coach Frank Beamer said a Saturday spent watching other teams play quickly reminded him teams need to be ready every week. When asked at Monday's weekly news conference about whether he has talked to his team about its bowl prospects, the normally business-like Butch Davis showed a flash of emotion. "Nope," said the Tar Heels coach while rocking back from the lectern and shaking his head. "One week at a time. To try to project, to try to prognosticate and all those kinds of things, it doesn't make any sense. Regardless of what your record is, the game that you're playing is the only one that really matters." Virginia Tech's Dyrell Roberts leads the nation in kickoff returns with 40.8 yards per return and brought one back 98 yards for a touchdown earlier this season. UNC's kickoff coverage is ranked sixth in the ACC (41.9 yards per return) but will be keeping a wary eye on Roberts tonight. North Carolina defensive end E.J. Wilson didn't try to mince words earlier this week. "We are desperate for a win," he said. "We need to get our first conference win, and we really, really need to get back on track because we've let a couple games slip away from us that we had a great opportunity to win." North Carolina's senior defensive end E.J. Wilson has had to re-live not one, but two gut-wrenching defeats this week. UNC is coming off a 30-27 loss against Florida State last Thursday in Chapel Hill in which it led 24-6 early in the third quarter. But the Tar Heels wilted down the stretch as Seminole quarterback Christian Ponder completed his final 16 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns. North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates was walking off the field last Thursday after his team's loss to Florida State when he felt something ping off his helmet -- launched from the stands, he believes, by a Tar Heels fan. T.J. Yates was walking off the field at Kenan Stadium last Thursday night when something flew out of the stands and hit him in the helmet. It was thrown by a disgruntled North Carolina fan, upset by the loss to Florida State. Yates said he thought it was a pen, but he didn't stop to find out. |
