November 4, 2009 Conner Vernon's 42-yard touchdown late in Duke's 28-17 victory at Virginia last week was the product of a series of split-second decisions by the receiver and senior quarterback Thaddeus Lewis. North Carolina officials have long wanted to move the traditional season-ending football game between Duke and UNC to an earlier point on the schedule. The Tar Heels preferred to have N.C. State as the regular-season finale so there would be more drama to the home stretch. He coached the North Carolina Tar Heels to a second NCAA basketball championship in five years and now is mentioned in the same sentence as Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Bobby Knight and Mike Krzyzewski. It's easy to forget that Roy Williams shares common roots with the mountain natives of his home state. His new autobiography "Hard Work: A Life On and Off the Court," which hit the book stands Tuesday, sheds light for the first time on his sometimes tough childhood raised by a single mom in Asheville and his rise to fame as one of the greatest coaches of our time. Williams is a great storyteller, and once you start reading, it's hard to put down. Duke quarterback Thaddeus Lewis measures his confidence on a scale that reads "through the roof." The senior is more comfortable in his role than at any time since arriving four years ago and becoming the Blue Devils' starter as a freshman. "Thad is in a zone right now," Duke senior running back Re'quan Boyette said. "He's making all the right throws. Making all the right reads. Making all the right checks, getting us into the right protections." Bragging rights usually have been Duke's only incentive in football games against North Carolina. This season is a big exception. The Blue Devils have known only torment from the neighboring Tar Heels for most of the past 20 seasons, and they still want the bragging rights. But at 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the ACC heading into Saturday's game at Kenan Stadium, Duke has a chance for its first winning season since 1994, and maybe more. |
