November 5, 2009 Rick Reilly wrote a Sports Illustrated column on Kendall Marshall. The Washington Post put Marshall on the cover of its paper. And not just the sports section. The entire paper. A recruiting service, HoopScoopOnline.com, ranked Marshall the No. 1 basketball prospect in the nation. Thing was, Marshall had yet to graduate high school at that point. Heck, he hadn't even finished elementary school. Elon University put the ball in front of the net as time wound down and that created an anxious moment for third-ranked North Carolina in Tuesday night's men's soccer game at Rhodes Stadium. But goalkeeper Scott Goodwin of the Tar Heels snatched the ball away before 6-foot Chris Thomas could attempt a header and North Carolina prevailed 2-1. North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams always says he's honored to be involved in one of the greatest rivalries in all of college sports. So it's fitting that when he shared one of his most embarrassing road-trip moments with the Durham Sports Club on Wednesday, it happened during a 1979 UNC-Duke game at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Admittedly, Roy Williams still finds it strange these days to show up at the Smith Center without seeing that big black Dodge pickup truck with "Show Me State" plates anchored in the parking lot. Williams still expects to find Tyler Hansbrough in the Tar Heels' weight room lifting or out on the court firing jumpers. But alas Hansbrough is gone, now a rookie with the Indiana Pacers and a budding commercial actor. So Williams' daily searches continue to prove futile. It's hard to label a fifth-year senior with 55 career starts a potential breakout candidate. But Marcus Ginyard will certainly have a lot on his shoulders. Virginia guard Sylven Landesberg voted for Wake Forest's Ish Smith as the ACC's fastest player. Then he wanted to know how many other ACC players had cast votes for Smith. Either Duke or North Carolina will be one win away from bowl eligibility after Saturday's game in Chapel Hill. For the second time in three days, North Carolina women's soccer beat Maryland. There was more riding this time on a chilly night at WakeMed Soccer Park, where the Tar Heels won 3-0 in the final of four first-round games in the ACC Women's Soccer Championship. And this time it was a more convincing win. For tonight's exhibition game against Francis Marion, the North Carolina women's basketball team will feature a roster brimming with young talent. But with youth comes inexperience, and the No. 5 Tar Heels are bracing for the possibility of a season without senior forward Jessica Breland, a 6-foot-3 preseason All-America candidate. Jabari Price has changed his mind about where he wants to play college football and will head to North Carolina instead of Minnesota. Price, a 5-11, 170-pound senior at Ely High in Pompano Beach, Fla., committed to UNC on Tuesday night. He had committed to Minnesota earlier but had second thoughts and re-opened the recruiting process. He also considered Rutgers. |
