January 15, 2010Some of the top hoops talent in North Carolina and Virginia converges on the storied Greensboro Coliseum Monday for the eighth annual Martin Luther King Day Scholastic Classic.
Among those prospects that will be on hand includes North Carolina's two junior (2011) commitments---shooting guard P.J. Hairston of Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley and power forward James McAdoo of Norfolk Christian.
The first game of the day features Lewisville (N.C.) Forsyth Country Day and Jamestown (N.C.) Ragsdale.
Forsyth Country Day features 6-8 senior center George Massoda, a High Point signee, and 6-6 Nick Sink, a Duke football commitment.
They are led at point guard by 2012 prospect Tyler Lewis, who has a host of early offers from schools including Appalachian State, Auburn, Charlotte, and Virginia Tech.
The 5-11 sophomore could potentially become a player watch on North Carolina's long-term recruiting radar.
The event's second game, scheduled for approximately 1:00 pm, has a matchup between McAdoo and his Norfolk Christian teammates against Concord (N.C.) Cannon School, who are led by 6-7 forward Jarell Eddie, a Virginia Tech signee.
McAdoo and Eddie, who should spend plenty of time matched up against one another in the low post, is a preview of competition between the Tar Heels and Hokies in the coming years.
At 4:30 pm Hairston and his Dudley teammates take the court in front of what should be a supportive local crowd against an Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy.
Oak Hill is loaded yet again this season, with five-star undecided guard Doron Lamb, four-star guard Juwan Staten, a Dayton signee, and four-star forward Roscoe Smith, a one-time North Carolina recruit who wound up signing with Connecticut.
Oak Hill also features 6-10 center Baye Moussa Keita, who is a Syracuse pledge, and 6-2 guard Pe'Shon Howard, who is going to Maryland.
Among its juniors, Oak Hill also includes Keith Hornsby, the son of singer Bruce Hornsby.
In this same event back in 2006, future Tar Heels Ty Lawson and Will Graves faced off in a matchup of these same two teams.
Lawson's Warriors got the best of Graves' Panthers that particular Monday afternoon four years ago, and while it will be a tall order this time around, Hairston and his Dudley mates would obviously like to make new history.
In the game immediately following Dudley-Oak Hill, there's a matchup of in-state private schools as Oak Ridge (N.C.) Military Academy---featuring 6-5 forward Jay Canty, a 2010 Xavier commitment---face off against Wilson (N.C.) Greenfield, led by senior guard Brian Richardson, who is committed to South Carolina, and fellow 2010 wing Jeremy Jeffers.
Of interest to ACC basketball fans in this particular game is the presence of 6-9 sophomore power forward Joseph Uchebo of Oak Ridge Academy, who committed to N.C. State back in November. Uchebo is a transplant from Mount Zion Academy in Durham.
