February 21, 2010MORE: Top 100 Hoops Teams | McDonald's game rosters announced
When realized the top boys basketball teams in Georgia were close when we put five of them in our latest RivalsHigh Top 100 rankings.
We just didn't realize how close. Saturday night, we found out - they are about a foot apart.
At least that was the case during the Region 6 AAAAA tournament when No. 41 Alpharetta (Ga.) Milton held off No. 83 Marietta (Ga.) Wheeler, 72-71, in overtime.
According the report in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Wheeler thought it had sent the game into double-overtime when Jelan Kendrick beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Game officials, however, quickly ruled he was just over the line, making it just a two-point loss.
Wheeler, a Memphis signee and the No. 8 player in the Rivals 150 for the Class of 2010, was in foul trouble for much of the game and finished with just seven points.
Milton led for much of a closely contested game and led by six with 1:17 left in regulation before Wheeler came back and tied it.
Milton had a chance to put the game away in overtime when Shannon Scott went to the line with two shots with only 5.9 seconds to play. He made the first but missed the second, setting up Kendrick's shot.
