CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Freshman guard Derrick Gordon had 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead Western Kentucky to a 62-55 victory over cold-shooting Southern Illinois on Wednesday night.

Junior guard Jamal Crook scored 12 points for the Hilltoppers (4-6), who had lost six straight away from home dating to last season.

Mamadou Seck's 20 points and seven assists led the Salukis (1-4), who were unable to overcome 35.2 percent shooting (19 of 54). Jeff Early had 13 points and T.J. Lindsay 10.

Freshman forward George Fant's basket broke a 37-37 tie with 13:39 to go, and the Hilltoppers led the rest of the way. The lead peaked at 55-44 with 4:16 left.

Western Kentucky outscored the Salukis 27-12 off the bench.

Southern Illinois played without starting senior guard Justin Bocot, who was held out in what the school described as "a police investigation" for an unspecified incident.
