June 5, 2012University of North Carolina baseball signee Matt Smoral was selected in the supplemental round of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Monday.
Smoral was tabbed 50th overall by the Toronto Blue Jays during Monday night's portion of the MLB Draft.
Smoral is a power left-hander with a power slider and is ranked as one of the top left-handed pitchers in the country.
Ranked the No. 3 player in the country by Perfect Game and No. 6 overall in the 2012 class by Baseball America.
Perfect Game tabbed Smoral as the No. 32 prospect in the 2012 MLB Draft, while Baseball America had the 6-8 left-hander No. 24 overall.
Smoral missed a majority of his final high school campaign at Solon High School in Solon, Ohio due to a broken bone in his right foot.
The Toronto Blue Jays will retain the rights to Smoral until the 2012 signing deadline of July 13.
The draft resumes Tuesday at 12 p.m. with rounds 2 through 15 with coverage on MLB.com.
