East Tennessee State at a glance
North Carolina: An important page was ripped out of No. 14 North Carolina's book when starting freshman point guard Marcus Paige jammed his left shoulder in practice. But Dexter Strickland stepped in admirably to lead the Tar Heels to a 102-84 win over UAB in Jerod Haase and Bobby Frasor's homecoming. [Recap]
ETSU-North Carolina Series
ETSU-North Carolina Notes
ETSU: At no time in the tenure of ETSU head coach Murry Bartow have the Buccaneers had less experience. Currently, the team has eight players who are eligible and healthy enough to play, of that group there is only four total years of Division I experience.
ETSU: Since Feb. 16, 1987, the Bucs have made at least one 3-pointer in 771 consecutive games. In that game back on Feb. 16, 1987, the Bucs were 0-for-8 in a loss to Davidson.
ETSU: With the signing of junior college transfers Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard (4.4 ppg, 2.0 rpg) and Hunter Harris (7.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg), the Bucs are hoping to have added some strength -- and beef -- to their inside game this season ... At 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, Gadsden-Gilliard is a rare combination of size and agility, while Harris is a high energy player who can rebound and block shots at a high level.
ETSU: Because of circumstance and injury, the Bucs are simply a shell of the team they expected to be at this point of the year. This has left head coach Murry Bartow focusing on the future, as he plays a group of youngsters and junior college transfers, and waits for the return of players such as talented senior guard Jarvis Jones and injured freshman point guard Petey McClain.
UNC: Carolina fans can help provide toys to over 5,000 Orange County, N.C., children who would go without gifts this holiday season if not for the help of the Orange County Toys for Tots campaign. At the East Tennessee State game, Carolina basketball and Orange County Toys for Tots are teaming up to try to collect all of those toys on one night at the Smith Center. Collection bins will be outside every Smith Center entrance and all Tar Heel fans are encouraged to bring one toy for a youngster in need in Orange County. Bins also will be posted at the park and ride lots at the Friday Center, and Chapel Hill Transit will provide a bus to transport the toys.
UNC: Saturday's game is the second of three consecutive home games for the Tar Heels, who will play five of six games in December in the Smith Center to close out their non-conference schedule for 2012-13. UNC's lone road game between now and Jan. 6 is a Dec. 19 contest at Texas in Austin.
UNC: Next up on the court after the ETSU game will be East Carolina, which will visit the Smith Center on Saturday Dec. 15 at noon. Former Tar Heel guard Jeff Lebo is the ECU head coach and will be making his second return visit to the Smith Center to face UNC. Lebo's Tennessee Tech squad lost in the Smith Center during the 1999-2000 season.
