August 8, 2005

Blake Mackey, one of the Buffs' top playmakers, left last Sunday's practice due to injury. Tests revealed on Monday morning that the junior wide receiver will miss the 2005 season due to a torn ACL. He will undergo surgery on the injured knee this Friday.

"We all feel badly for Blake," head coach Gary Barnett said. "He was having such a good camp thus far, and it's obviously a terrible thing to have happened.

"We have to be with him, help him through a difficult time and work with him to get him back for next year."

Mackey has battled the injury bug throughout his collegiate career, but enjoyed a breakout season as a sophomore. He caught 26 passes for a team-high 417 yards, averaging 16.0 yards per catch.

Mackey was a preseason fourth-team all-Big 12 selection by Phil Steele's College Football publication.

With Colorado's top deep threat at receiver gone for the season, eyes will turn to Patrick Williams, Alvin Barnett and Reggie Joseph. The athletic threesome are enjoying an impressive August camp thus far.

The Buffs are slated to compete in their first full-contact practice later this afternoon.
