May 30, 2006Louisville's top two recruits from the 2006 class have both arrived on the Belknap Campus for freshman orientation and are getting ready to start workouts later this summer.
Defensive end Deantwan Whitehead and safety Brandon Heath are both on campus currently along with other Cardinal freshmen according to U of L Sports Information.
Whitehead, nicknamed "Peanut", is Louisville top-ranked recruit for 2006 and was one of the nation's top five defensive ends in 2006. At 6-foot-6, 245-pounds, Whitehead could challenge for early playing time on the defensive line after racking up more than 140 tackles over the last two seasons for Birmingham's West End High School.
Ranked No. 52 overall in the nation for 2006, Whitehead was named to the Rivals100 list and was the No. 3 recruit in the state of Alabama last season. He chose Louisville over Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and Tennessee.
Heath, another of Louisville's four-star recruits, was ranked the No. 28 multi-position athlete in the nation and was among the top 50 recruits in the state of Florida for 2006. A 6-foot, 187-pound athlete from Palm Beach Lakes, Fla., Heath will likely play safety with the Cardnals.
Coach Bobby Petrino and his coaching staff recruited more highly-ranked athletes than ever in 2006, and Louisville finished with four four-star recruits and another 15 three-star recruits in a class of 25 players. In addition to Whitehead and Heath, Tallahassee (Fla.) defensive tackle Kareem Crowell and Louisville (Ky.) Manual defensive tackle Aundre Henderson were also four-star recruits.
U of L finished with the No. 8 class in the country among defensive tackle recruits, No. 12 among defensive ends and No. 34 overall.
