Jackets take FSU down 5-4

Wow, Jackets! The Noles now know what UNC learned in their series with GT...those guys take big swings. Jake Davies hit a pair of two-run HRs to lead the Yellow Jackets' upset over the top seed. FSU can't afford any more stumbles if they hope to reach the title game.

They can still lose one and advance. IIRC they did that last year. But it does make it harder.

^^^ State trailed 2-1 going into the 9th and staged a winning rally. There are some happy Pack fans (if there is such a thing, ha ha) here in Greensboro.

Miami's win over Wake Forest tonight eliminates both Wake and UNC from an appearance in the championship game on Sunday.

The Tar Heels are now relegated to the role of spoiler. If UNC beats NC State, the Hurricanes win Pool B. If UNC loses to NC State, the Wolfpack wins Pool B.

Also some shocking results in Pool A. Clemson beat FSU, which means the Seminoles are eliminated from championship contention.

GT plays Clemson tomorrow. If the Yellow Jackets win, they will have gone 3-0 and will earn a championship game appearance. If Clemson wins, they and GT will both be 2-1 but the Tigers will hold the tiebreaker due to the head-to-head win. However, if Virginia beats FSU there will be a three-way tie between GT, Clemson, and Virginia at 2-1.

If that happens, conference tiebreaker rules state that the team with the highest winning percentage in regular season conference play wins the tiebreaker. That favors Virginia, whose .621 winning percentage in the ACC regular season exceeds Clemson's .552 and GT's .393 winning percentages. So basically, the Wahoos control their own destiny in Pool A.

According to UNC's baseball twitter, Benton Moss will get the start for UNC. Hobbs Johnson and M. Morin are well rested and available in the UNC bullpen. R.C. Orlan can come in and throw some heat.
