Spartans offer Illinois wide receiver

One of the top wide receiver prospects in the Midwest for the class of 212 is Jordan Westerkamp of Montini Catholic High school in Lomdard, Illinois. SpartanMag.com caught up with the 6-foot-2, 190-pound prospect and got the details on his recruitment.

This weekend Michigan State held a junior day that featured many of the players that the Spartan staff is actively recruiting for the class of 2012. Westerkamp was one of the top prospects that was in East Lansing on Sunday and he got some good news while he was there. Head Coach Mark Dantonio extended him a scholarship. We asked him about the offer.

"I was very excited about offer," Westerkamp stated. "I know Michigan State has a great program and they have a great history of wide receivers."

While on campus Westerkamp was able to speak with the Michigan State Coaching staff and begin to develop some rapport with them. He talked about what the Spartans like about him.

"I was able to talk to my receiver coach (Terrence Samuels), the offensive coordinator (Dan Roushar) and Coach Dantonio," he said. "They said they really liked my highlight film. They feel I am a big play receiver as well as a physical player. They like my hands and my athleticism."

Westerkamp has an impressive list of scholarships that includes schools such as Boston College, Iowa, Illinois, Northwestern and Minnesota. He is also hearing from Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Oregon among others.

As a junior Westerkamp caught an astounding 89 passes for 1631-yards and scored 23 touchdowns. His play helped his team capture their 2nd consecutive Illinois High School 5A Championship. For his efforts, he was named the Chicago Tribune 1st Team All-State.

Westerkamp has been very busy this winter. He has recently visited schools such as Notre Dame, Iowa, Illinois and Purdue. SpartanMag.com asked him what he liked about his trip to East Lansing.

"I was able to see the facilities and was really impressed with the whole trip. I'm looking forward to getting back up for a spring practice.

Westerkamp has indicated that he is hoping to narrow his list down this spring. The fact that he was offered this weekend shows that he is a high-priority recruit for Michigan State. With 3 starting wide receivers graduating this year, recruiting this position is critical for the class of 2012.

SpartanMag.com's Take:

It is obvious why Michigan State likes Westerkamp. Watching his highlight film you can see he brings a lot of the same qualities to the position as former Spartan and current Indianapolis Colt Blair White. SpartanMag.com will continue to follow the recruitment of the outstanding 2012 Michigan State recruit.
