BC, VT in pursuit of 2013 ATH

Oren Burks is emerging as one of the top junior athletes in Virginia and the athletic, rangy prospect is looking to make a name for himself during the spring and summer.

Burks, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound receiver from Lorton (Va.) South County, is planning on attending the Boston College junior day that will be held on January 28. It will be his first time at the ACC school and he has high expectations.

"We've been planning that for a while now," Burks recently told EagleAction.com. "I've been exchanging e-mails with the coaches a lot the past couple of weeks, so we've been in contact a good bit.

"We've been trying to get up there for a while now so the junior day should be a good experience."

Burks said the Eagles have been recruiting him since about halfway through his junior season at South County.

Burks actually took the initiative and contacted BC, expressing interest and supplying his highlights from the first half of the year in the process.

Apparently the BC coaches were impressed with what they saw.

"It just started picking up from there," he said.

Burks noted that he also contacted and sent film to the coaches at Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and West Virginia.

This past fall he totaled 97 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and nine quarterback hurries on defense.

"I'm thinking right now I'll be recruited for either outside linebacker or safety," he said.

Burks denies having any favorites and said he's giving every school an equal shot. That said, he does admit that a couple of schools have recruited him harder than the others.

"Boston College has definitely shown a lot of interest and I've been in contact with them for a while," he said. "Virginia Tech, too, obviously with the guys they have up there (from the area). Most of the other schools have stayed in pretty good contact too, though."
