Junior day verbals continue to roll in
Shelby Harris, a 6-foot-4, 235-pound defensive end from Mequon (Wis.), joins Jordan Kohout as the latest in-state prospect to commit to Bret Bielema and the University of Wisconsin.
BadgerBlitz.com learned early this morning that Harris, a junior at Homestead High School, gave his verbal commitment to yesterday at Wisconsin's Junior Day.
"Yeah, I committed to the University of Wisconsin yesterday," Harris said.
A standout defensive end, Harris was shocked when Bielema announced they would offered an official scholarship.
"We were watching some videos during one of the junior day segments and I had already seen them from the previous year," explained Harris, who the defensive player of the year last season. "So, Coach (Bob) Bostad came down and got me and we went up to Coach Bielema's office.
"When we got in his office, I sat down with my mom and we had a good talk. Coach Bielema let me know that they wanted to offer. I had a short talk with my mom and I committed."
Before giving his verbal commitment, Harris was hot commodity among college coaches.
"I was getting interest from Iowa, Minnesota, Purdue, Indiana, Notre Dame, and Duke."
During his visit to Madison, Harris was able to meet a few other in-state prospects and struck up a couple new relationships.
"I talked to Jordan Kohout for awhile and I met Clay Gosse for the first time," Harris said. "Other than that, I talked to some kids from Illinois but I don't recall their names."
Harris was unaware of the commitment of fellow in-state defensive tackle. When Kohout's verbal brought to his attention, Harris was pleased to say the least.
"Jordan committed to Wisconsin? Oh really, that's really cool," he said. "I guess we are the future on the defensive line."
