Video: Nix leads Pershing to victory over No. 7 Oak Park

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Detroit Pershing will be without the services of Michigan State commitment Keith Appling for a few weeks longer until the broken bone in his shooting hand heals up.

Until then, the Doughboys will have to defend their No. 1 ranking by relying on other talented players from a ballclub that finished runner-up up to Saginaw in the Class A tournament last spring. And if Pershing's first four games are any indication, the Doughboys have enough firepower to hold of the teams gunning for them until Appling's return.

Last weekend, Pershing posted a double-digit win against a talented Romulus team. On Saturday, the Doughboys fought off another hungry opponent in No. 7 ranked Oak Park.

Pershing held off Oak Park 59-54 in the final game of the Mister Basketball Classic despite a spirited performance from Central Michigan signee K'allante Miller.

Miller led all scorers with 29 points. The future Chippewa added a dozen rebounds and four blocked shots. For his effort, he was awarded the MVP of the five-game showcase, which featured some of the top teams in the Detroit area.

Derrick Nix led Pershing in scoring and on the glass. The future Spartan netted 20 points and added 15 rebounds for the Doughboys, who moved to 4-0 on the year with their latest victory.

Oak Park led 16-14 after the first quarter before Pershing fed Nix in the post in the second and third quarters to build a substantial lead. Oak Park pressured Pershing the length of the court during the fourth quarter, forced turnovers, and tied the game 54-54 on back-to-back field goals off of Pershing turnovers with less than a minute remaining.

Pershing pulled in front for good at the free throw line before Nix threw down a dunk to seal the win over Oak Park.
Pershing's win over Oak Park gave the Detroit Public School League a sweep in the Classic. Earlier in the day, Cass Tech edged Lansing Sexton before Finney dismantled Oak Park Academy.

Embedded in this story are highlights of Nix and Miller from Saturday's match-up. Stay tuned to for more video highlights from earlier games at the Mister Basketball Classic.
