Battle of the Classes recap

Last weekend, several standouts from the states of North and South Carolina played a series of all-star games to establish which state was best. North Carolina bested their neighbors to the South in the class of 2011 and 2012 games while South Carolina took the 2013 game in overtime.

Glenn Elrod Gamecockcentral.com provides the following report.

2013 Notables

Allerik Freeman (Olympic HS, NC) - True combo guard that can run the point or move to the 2-spot. Freeman has excellent vision, and also displayed his ability to step back and hit from deep. His physical build helps him match up well on the defensive end. College interest - Baylor, Clemson, Florida, Georgetown, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest

Kennedy Meeks (West Charlotte HS, NC) - "Big Baby" as he is referred to by teammates had an excellent day finishing with 18 points. Meeks has a soft touch around the basket and showed his touch further from the hoop by knocking down a couple 10-12 footers. Meeks controlled the glass on both ends and blocked his share of shots. Runs the floor better now that he's trimmed down since the beginning of the Summer period. College interest - Georgetown, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Miami, NC State, South Carolina.

Mark Blackmon (Word of God, NC) - Ultra-quick point guard that paced his team in scoring with roughly 20 points. Blackmon pushed the tempo and proved he can knock down the big shot. Stepped back behind the arc multiple times to nail the three. Has worked hard lately on his jump shot. Excellent ball handling skills.

Sindarius Thornwell (Lancaster HS, SC) - Athletic talent that did everything from running the point to posting up in the paint. Thornwell is long and loves slicing his way to the bucket. Coming off a foot injury earlier this Fall, he was named MVP of the SC 2013's with 19 points.

2012 Notables

Montrezl Harrell (N Edgecomb HS, NC) - Super gifted athlete put on a show that won't soon be forgotten. Carried his squad on his back with 4-5 second half highlight real dunks. The jam that brought everyone to their feet was a breakaway, between the legs windmill slam. College interest - Xavier, Virginia Tech, NC State, Clemson, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Miami

Travis Hammond (Richland Northeast HS, SC) - Smooth three point shooter had a big game finishing with 16 points. Showed his versatility by finishing in the lane along with his outside touch.

2011 Notables

Jervon Pressley (E.E. Wadell HS, NC) - Sporting the flat-top fade haircut, Pressley finished with a couple monster dunks that almost brought the backboard down. He was a force in the paint, swatting shots left and right and pulling down boards. Named MVP of 2011 game. Needs to work on a 8-10 foot jump shot to add to his arsenal. Committed to Georgia State

Jacoby Davis (West Charlotte HS, NC) - Davis is built rock solid and looked even more bulky than this Summer. He scored early and often in the lane, finishing with 17 points. Committed to North Florida.

Donta Harper (South Central HS, NC) - Versatile 6'5 wing tallied 11 points scoring inside and out.

Anthony Gill (Charlotte Christian HS, NC) - Gill was fighting a stomach virus but played well on both ends. His motor runs the entire time he is on the court, often diving for loose balls and scrapping for rebounds. Gill finished with 10 points. Committed to South Carolina.

Corey Littlejohn (Heathwood Hall, SC) - Another combo type guard that always seemed to make good decision with the basketball. Drove the lane and found his big men well. He led his SC team with 17 points. Committed to UNC-Asheville

Damien Leonard (JL Mann HS, SC) - Leonard knocked down three first half three pointers but was pretty much held in check during the second half. Seemed to be more aggressive in other aspects of his game such as rebounding and getting his teammates the rock. Committed to South Carolina.
