Pack picks up in-state speedster

When athlete Bra'Lon Cherry of New Bern (N.C.) High visited NC State for the Kay Yow Spring Game April 21, he knew then that he wanted to play for the Wolfpack.

To have that chance, Cherry had to earn an offer by shining at NC State's summer one-day camp June 23. After checking in at 5-foot-11, 175 pounds, Cherry ran a 40-yard dash in 4.43 seconds.

As the saying goes, speed kills, and NC State decided that Cherry was too fast to pass up. The Pack offered Cherry a scholarship Monday morning, and he accepted.

"I was surprised," Cherry said. "It feels like a whole lot of relief. I have been waiting for a long time."

Cherry was hearing from most of the programs in the state, including UNC, East Carolina, Wake Forest and smaller colleges like Appalachian State, Charlotte, Elon and Old Dominion, but he had his eye on NC State.

"I liked the environment," Cherry stated. "I liked the school. I want to be an engineer, so it goes good with my education. I liked the whole facilities and coaches."

Needless to say, NC State was pleased to hear Cherry state he was committed.

"They were happy," Cherry said, adding he will probably play receiver for the Pack. "They said I should help them a lot in winning a championship."

The Wolfpacker will have more on Cherry's commitment, including comments from his coach Bobby Curlings, in the future.
