GEORGIA TECH: RB Orwin Smith ran for 89 yards and a touchdown, and Georgia Tech amassed 370 yards rushing against the nation's fourth-ranked defense against the run at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium in College Park, Md. Yellow Jacket freshman QB Vlad Lee added a pair of 2-yard touchdown runs, and senior QB Tevin Washington also rushed for a score, the 34th of his career -- one short of the school and ACC record for quarterbacks held by Joshua Nesbitt. Final score: Georgia Tech 33, Maryland 13

NORTH CAROLINA: RB Giovani Bernard's 74-yard punt return with 13 seconds remaining lifted North Carolina past the rival Wolfpack at Kenan Stadium. Bernard's return capped a wild afternoon that saw the Tar Heels build a 25-7 first-quarter lead, only to see NC State score 28 unanswered points to take a 35-25 lead into the fourth quarter. UNC then outscored the Wolfpack 18-0 in the final 15 minutes to claim its first win in the series in 2006. The punt return capped a huge day for Bernard, who ran for 135 yards and two touchdowns. He also had eight receptions for 95 yards. Final score: North Carolina 43, N.C. State 35

Georgia Tech-North Carolina Series
North Carolina and Georgia Tech are meeting for the 48th time with the Yellow Jackets holding a 26-18-3 lead in the series. Georgia Tech has won 12 of the last 14 against Carolina, including a 35-28 win last year in Atlanta and a 30-24 victory in Chapel Hill in 2010. Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson is a native of Newland, N.C., and he earned his bachelor's degree from Western Carolina in 1979 and a master's degree from Appalachian State in 1982. He began his coaching career at Avery County (N.C.) High School and also coached Lees-McRae Junior College in Banner Elk, N.C.

GT: Senior QB Tevin Washington has 34 career rushing touchdowns, which puts him 2nd in the ACC career list in career TDs for a QB, trailing only former ACC standout Joshua Nesbitt of Georgia Tech (35). This year, Washington is tied for 9th nationally in points per game (10.67) and is .

GT: Georgia Tech is averaging 318.22 yards per game this year in rushing offense, which ranks 4th nationally. Since the beginning of the 2008 season, when head coach Paul Johnson brought his spread option attack to the Flats, Tech has rushed for more yards than any other team in the FBS. During that time, Tech has averaged 304.34 rushing yards per game with 18,869 yards in 62 games.

GT: Sophomore return specialist Jamal Golden is third in the ACC and 18th nationally in kick return average (27.8 avg). He totaled 174 KO return yards versus BYU, including a 97-yarder for a touchdown -- Tech's first KO return for a TD since Oct. 31, 1998, at Maryland.

GT: Senior AB Orwin Smith has racked up 992 all-purpose yards this season and his 110.2 average is ninth in the ACC. Smith's career average of 9.7 yards per carry is the highest by any active FBS player with 100+ career carries.

GT: Tech's defense has recorded at least one interception in eight consecutive games. Eight players share the team's 10 picks, led by Jemea Thomas' three.

UNC: Sophomore TB Giovani Bernard leads the nation in punt return average (20.75), is 3rd nationally in all-purpose yardage (214.0) and scoring (12.86) and 5th in rushing (132.9). In his last four games, Bernard has run for 717 yards, an average of 179.3 yards per game, while averaging 7.4 yards per carry.

UNC: The number of ACC placekickers named as semifinalists for the Lou Groza Award, which is given annually to the nation's best placekicker. Named to the semifinal list of 20 are Florida State's Dustin Hopkins,Clemson's Chandler Catanzaro, Duke's Ross Martin and North Carolina's Casey Barth. Hopkins is a semifinalist for the 3rd time and was also a finalist last year.

UNC: The Tar Heels are 5-0 at home with wins over Elon, East Carolina, Idaho, Virginia Tech and NC State. The Tar Heels have home games remaining with Georgia Tech (Nov. 10) and Maryland (Nov. 24). North Carolina has gone undefeated and untied at home just seven times since 1927 (86 years).

UNC: Carolina is averaging more than 250 yards passing (280.8) and 200 yards rushing (207.0). UNC is one of only nine FBS schools and one of just two ACC schools (FSU is the other) averaging at least 250 passing and 200 rushing.

UNC: Carolina ranks fourth in the country in tackles for losses with 7.89 per game. DE Kareem Martin (12.5) leads the team, followed by LB Kevin Reddick (12.0) and DT Sylvester Williams (9.5).

UNC: WR Erik Highsmith ranks fifth all-time at UNC with 154 receptions. He needs two catches to pass Corey Holliday (155) and into fourth place.
