LONG BEACH STATE: The 49ers opened the season with 75-65 win over North Alabama before losing 62-44 at USC on Wednesday night. The 49ers only trailed the Trojans by five at halftime, but had a bad second half offensively. Sophomore Mike Caffey led the scoring for LBSU with 17 points.

NORTH CAROLINA: The Tar Heels opened the Maui Invitational with an 80-56 win over Florida Atlantic on Sunday afternoon. James Michael McAdoo led UNC with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Long Beach State-North Carolina Series
Carolina leads the all-time series with Long Beach State, 2-0, winning both previous meetings in Chapel Hill in the last two seasons. Two years ago, UNC beat the 49ers by a 96-91 score on Dec. 11, 2010, in Chapel Hill. Last year, Carolina beat LBSU 84-78 on Dec. 10, 2010, in the Smith Center. Roy Williams is 3-1 as a head coach against Long Beach State, including a 1-1 mark at Kansas and a 2-0 record at Carolina.

Long Beach State-North Carolina Notes
LBSU: The 49ers will be looking for their first win ever against an ACC team on Friday night. Long Beach State has a 0-6 all-time record against the league with five of the six games being played in the Dan Monson Era. LBSU is 0-2 against North Carolina, Duke and Clemson. None of the previous games were played in Long Beach.

LBSU: Long Beach State earned 13 first-place votes and 194 points to emerge the favorite for the 2012-13 Big West men's basketball title, according to the annual preseason media poll.

LBSU: James Ennis was named to the preseason All-Big West Conference Team by the league's media. Ennis, the 49ers' lone returning starter from the 2011-12 club that finished 25-9 overall, earned All-Big West Honorable Mention recognition last season after averaging 10.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. The 6-7 guard/forward also ranked No. 2 in the conference in steals (1.6 spg).

LBSU: Sophomore guard Mike Caffey takes the reins of the 49er offense replacing two-time Big West Conference Player of the Year Casper Ware at point guard. As a true freshman, Caffey averaged 5.9 points and 2.2 assists in 21.8 minutes per game. The Riverside, Calif. product finished with a 1.76 assist-to-turnover ratio, handing out 76 assists while only turning the ball over 43 times in 2011-12.

LBSU: True freshman point guard Branford Jones is out at least 8-12 weeks after injuring his lower leg during the season-opening win against North Alabama. Jones was hurt in the second half when a Lions' player took out his leg while diving for a loose ball. Before getting hurt, Jones was impressive in his fi rst collegiate game scoring eight points (4-of-7 shooting), grabbing three boards and handing out a team-high three assists in just 15 minutes of action. Long Beach State's other back-up point guard, junior Jerramy King, missed the North Alabama game with a shoulder injury.

UNC: Sophomore James Michael McAdoo is averaging 22.5 points per game and 12.5 rebounds per game after Carolina's first two games of the season.

UNC: After Friday night's game, the Tar Heel traveling party will fly to Hawaii to take part in the EA Sports Maui Invitational hosted by Chaminade University next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Carolina will begin play in Maui on Monday at 6 p.m. Eastern against Mississippi State.

UNC: Carolina is 13-2 all-time in the Maui Invitational, winning the tournament in the 1999-2000, 2004-05 and 2008-09 seasons and reaching the finals in 1989-90 and 1995-96. The Tar Heels have reached the championship game in all five of their previous appearances in the event.

UNC: Carolina coach Roy Williams is making his fifth appearance in the Maui Invitational and third as the UNC head coach. His first two appearances (1996-97 and 2001-02) came as head coach at Kansas. Williams is 11-1 as a head coach at the Maui Invitational and 16-3 overall in games played in Hawaii.

UNC: Carolina's next home game will come on Dec. 1 against UAB in the Smith Center. The Blazers are coached by former UNC assistant Jerod Haase, in his first season in Birmingham.
