Prior to three years ago, the only previous meeting in the series was a 77-59 Carolina win on March 15, 1986, in Ogden, Utah, in the NCAA Tournament West Regional second round at the Dee Events Center. The third-seeded Tar Heels beat the sixth-seeded Blazers to advance to the Sweet 16, where Carolina lost to freshman Pervis Ellison and eventual NCAA champion Louisville the next week in Houston, Texas. Roy Williams is 2-0 as a head coach against UAB, going 1-0 at both UNC and Kansas.
