McNeese State brings win streak to UNC

McNeese State will carry a five-game winning streak into Saturday's game at nationally ranked North Carolina in a game that will be televised by ESPNU beginning at 12 noon eastern.

The Cowboys (6-3) are coming off an 80-75 win over Texas Tech in a game that saw McNeese pin down its highest shooting percentage (55.9 percent) in nearly two years (57.1 percent vs. Sam Houston State on Feb. 14, 2011). The game at North Carolina will be the first-ever meeting against the Tar Heels.

---McNeese has won five straight games... it's the longest winning streak since winning 8 straight from Jan. 25-Feb. 18 of last season.

---McNeese, who is a perfect 5-0 at home this season, picked up its first win on the road (1-3) at Texas Tech on Sunday. The win over the Red Raiders was the first ever for McNeese against a member of the Big 12 Conference (1-9).

---McNeese has knocked in over 50 percent of its shots in the last two games and in three of the last five contests. Also, McNeese is being out-rebounded by a 43-30 margin in the three road games.

---Including North Carolina, McNeese's five road opponents have a combined record of 33-14 (LSU 7-1; Ole Miss 7-1; SE Missouri 6-6; Texas Tech 5-3; North Carolina 8-3).

---Cowboys are outscoring their last three opponents by a score of 142-115 in the second half, or an average of 47.3-38-3 for a plus-9 score advantage.

---The last five games, McNeese has connected on 159 of 313 from the floor for 50.8 percent... shot over 50 the last two games - 52.5 vs. La. Tech and 55.9 at Texas Tech.

---Sophomore forward Desharick Guidry's streak of five straight double-doubles came to an end at Texas State... it's tied as the second longest streak in school history.

---Freshman forward Austin Lewis has made his last 7 shots covering three games... school record is 10 consecutive FGs made.

---At 6-3, McNeese is out to its best start through the first nine games since the 2010-11 Southland championship team started out 6-3... before then, the last time a Cowboys team started 6-3 was in 1995-96.

---According to cbssports.com, McNeese has an RPI of No. 44 heading into Saturday's game.

---Averaging 9.9 steals a game as a team, McNeese ranks tied for 16th in the nation.

---McNeese's starting five consists of two seniors (guards Dontae Cannon and Jeremie Mitchell), two sophomores (wing Kevin Hardy and Guidry) and a true freshman (Lewis).

---Head Coach Dave Simmons is in his 7th season at the helm at McNeese and has compiled an 93-102 record. He's the only coach in school history to take the team to back-to-back national postseason tournaments - 2010-11 NIT and 2011-12 CollegeInsider.com... he recorded his 120th career win after Sunday's victory at Texas Tech.
