NCSU - UNC Capsule

Basketball Preview

North Carolina hosts their in-state rivals North Carolina State Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill and will look to avenge an earlier loss to the Wolfpack.

In that game, UNC got run off the court in the first half, getting outscored 20-0 in fast break points through the first stanza.  The Tar Heels battled back after being down by 28 points before ultimately losing 91-83.

After the game, UNC Head Coach Roy Williams stated that he wasn't fond of "learning experiences" and essentially told his club to man-up.

Since that game UNC has gone 5-2, losing a close game to Duke and a more lopsided affair to Miami.  The victories have been highlighted by a high scoring output against Virginia, a team notorious for keeping scores low.

UNC only has five regular season games remaining.  Unlike years past, this year's squad is still in the process of getting its NCAA Tournament ticket stamped and approved.  The remaining games will go a long way in determining where the Tar Heels play their postseason basketball.

P.J. Hairston

The P.J. Hairston scoring machine slowed down in North Carolina's 70-58 victory over Georgia Tech Tuesday night.  Fortunately for Tar Heels fans, the rest of the team didn't look too shabby.

In fact, James Michael McAdoo poured in a double-double by scoring 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.  Leslie McDonald played like he aims to take over Hairston's role as the big scorer of the bench by scoring 15 points.

It was the eighth straight game in which he's played that Hairston has scored in double-figures so it's safe to assume that he won't stay down in that statistical category for long.

Leslie McDonald

McDonald had 15 points and connected on four three-pointers against Georgia Tech earlier in the week.

After being injured/suspended for a chunk during the middle of the season, McDonald hadn't been much of a factor until Tuesday night.  His performance against the Yellow Jackets was easily his best performance since his return.

If UNC can count on McDonald to give them everything Hairston did before being moved into the starting line-up (bench scoring), it will make that move look even better moving forward.

North Carolina State's consistency

Many people thought this would be a huge year for the Wolfpack.

In some regards it has.

N.C. State beat Duke and North Carolina at the PNC Arena.

But after beating Duke, N.C. State lost to Maryland.  After beating UNC, N.C. State proceeded to lose its next three games.

The Wolfpack have been wildly inconsistent this year.  They've had huge moments and huge letdowns.  They could be a team that reaches the Final Four.  They could also get bounced in the first round.  They might not even make it to the NCAA Tournament.

UNC will get to test their ability to take every opponent seriously when they lock horns with N.C. State Saturday.

UNC has had its own consistency issues but unlike N.C. State, with such a young team it was to be expected.
N.C. State and North Carolina could be battling for the same position in the postseason making this already meaningful rivalry game even more important.
