Maryland - UNC Capsule

Basketball Preview

North Carolina fans won't get the chance to see their favorite team get a third crack at arch-rival Duke.

That's because Maryland took care of the Blue Devils Friday night with an 83-74 quarterfinal victory.

UNC beat Florida State 83-62 Friday night to advance.

The Tar Heels will take on the Terrapins in the ACC tournament semifinals on Saturday.  They will go up against a team fighting for its postseason life.  Maryland wasn't given a strong chance to make the NCAA tournament heading into this week but after strong performances against Wake Forest and Duke, Maryland is looking to snag an at-large bid if they don't win the conference tournament to secure an automatic bid.

North Carolina already owns two wins over Maryland from the regular season.  They should be familiar with the northern school because they just played them a little over a week ago.

Dez Wells

Dez Wells has been sensational in Greensboro so far.

He dropped 21 points against Wake Forest Thursday night and followed it up with a 30 point outing against Duke.

Wells is on his way, should Maryland make a miracle run to a title, to being named the most impressive player of this year's ACC tournament.

While his scoring has been impressive it's his efficiency that's been incredible.  Wells shot 69 percent against Duke and 70 percent against Wake Forest.  He's only missed one free throw (15-16) and connected on all four of his three-point attempts.

Wells was the leading scorer for Maryland in both of the previous games against UNC and there isn't any indication he will slow down Saturday.

P.J. Hairston

P.J. Hairston was the driving force behind UNC's win over Florida State Friday night.

He scored 21 points and was 5-6 from beyond the arc.  Hairston left the game late with a laceration on his hand and it remains to be seen how that will affect his ability to play Saturday.

UNC needs Hairston on the court.

Hairston's insertion into the line-up has turned UNC into a completely different ball club.  With him on the court, it spaces the floor for his teammates and has opened up everyone else's offense.

Hairston scored 22 points and hauled in eight rebounds during the March 6 game at College Park. If there is anyway Hairston can go, there should be no doubt that the Greensboro native will be on the court hoisting shots against the Terrapins.

James Michael McAdoo

James Michael McAdoo only had 12 points on nine shots against Florida State.

North Carolina's leading scorer for the year has been playing through a back injury and will continue to do so for as long as the season remains.

McAdoo fouled out of the game Friday night and the injury no doubt affected his defensive technique but not his hustle.  McAdoo dove to the court early in the game, a sure sign of his toughness even if he isn't at full strength.

North Carolina is pretty short-handed on the inside, lacking experience and talent in that department, so even though McAdoo is injured, UNC can't afford a dip in his production.

Maryland's Alex Len should see plenty of touches inside as Maryland looks to take advantage of the weakened Tar Heels interior.
