Booker becomes third '14 commit for UK

In the first of two Thursday announcements Kentucky secured at least one commitment for the day, landing four-star wing Devin Booker.

The Moss Point (Miss.) senior is the No. 30 prospect in the 2014 Rivals150, and is considered one of the nation's elite shooters and scorers.

Kentucky offered the 6-foot-6 wing in April prior to the start of the AAU season, and then made Booker one of its top priorities during the NCAA live recruiting period as UK coaches followed his Alabama Challenge team during Nike EYBL events.

Booker officially visited Lexington in September for the Alumni Charity Game, and also took official visits to Michigan and Missouri.

Both Michigan and Missouri made strong pushes for Booker, but the appeal of Kentucky, particularly the reputation for developing top talent, was too strong for the four-star to pass up.

Booker's father, Melvin Booker, played at Missouri and recently entered the Tigers' basketball Hall of Fame, while Michigan stayed in the running until late, partly because Booker's mother lives in Michigan near the Ann Arbor campus.

Booker should be counted on to supply points for the Wildcats early in his career, with his combination of size and shooting ability making for a tough matchup at the college level, whether he ends up at the shooting guard or small forward position.

The Mississippi native gives UK its third commitment in the 2014 class, joining four-star point guard Tyler Ulis (one of Booker's close friends) and five-star post Karl Towns.

The commitment of Booker gives Kentucky a great start to Thursday, as the Wildcats staff will now wait until later this evening when five-star guard James Blackmon announces his decision. Blackmon is down to Kentucky, Indiana and Michigan.

***Check back with Cats Illustrated later this evening for more on the Booker and Blackmon decisions, including quotes from both players.***
