Edwards' UNC future in jeopardy

North Carolina was looking forward to the arrival of Raleigh (N.C.) Ravenscroft tight end Avery Edwards later this summer, but that may not happen now as Edwards was arrested on Thursday in Wake County and charged with felony larceny.

According to a report Thursday evening in the Raleigh News and Observer, Edwards has been charged with the theft of five watches and one pair of diamond stud earrings, valued at approximately $53,000.

The theft reportedly occurred May 23, and Wake County sheriff's deputies obtained a search warrant earlier this week.

As of Thursday afternoon Edwards was still in the Wake County jail under $20,000 bail, but by Thursday evening his family confirmed that he was home, released on an unsecured bond.

If Edwards is convicted of a felony, it's highly unlikely he'll be able to enroll at UNC as originally planned, and his enrollment is sure to be delayed now in light of the fact that he's facing formal criminal proceedings.

Edwards projected as a potential early-impact player for the Tar Heels in 2014---a key piece of the puzzle for UNC in replacing Top 10 Draft pick Eric Ebron.

But now his status as a Tar Heel is very much up in the air as he deals with his legal issues.
