Meet the Tar Heel Illustrated Staff

Adam Powell

TarHeelIllustrated.com publisher Adam Powell has been closely following the University of North Carolina's basketball and football teams most all his life. He's involved in all aspects of the TarHeelIllustrated.com's content, including team and recruiting coverage. A 2001 graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, Powell first started covering the Tar Heel basketball and football beat in 2004, and he's covered multiple bowl games and two Final Fours, including the 2005 and 2009 NCAA championship teams. He's also contributed to the Sanford (N.C.) Herald and South Boston (Va.) News and Record newspapers, ACC Sports Journal/ACCSports.com, and Cavalier Corner magazine. Adam is a member of ACSMA (Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association) and is an official voter on the All-ACC preseason and postseason football and basketball teams. Clint Jackson

Basketball Recruiting Director Clint Jackson brings over 15 years of experience to TarHeelIllustrated.com. A resident of Midlothian (Va.), Jackson broke into the business in the mid-1990s with HighMajorHoops.com, and has covered countless players over the years that have gone on to superstardom in the NBA---not to mention every North Carolina basketball player over the last decade during their recruitments. He also ran his own website for a time called TarHeelRadar.com, which merged with Rivals. Jackson has covered UNC and Duke basketball recruiting for Rivals.com since 2006. Justin Rowland

TarHeelIllustrated.com football recruiting analyst Justin Rowland has more than a decade of experience covering the college football recruiting scene. Originally from Cary, N.C., Rowland currently resides in Missouri, just outside St. Louis. He has worked with Rivals.com covering recruits across the Southeast and contributes to several team sites, in addition to publishing UDUBNation.com, and multiple Rivals team sites within the ACC, including UNC, Duke, Virginia, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, and Boston College. He has also contributed to Athlon, Lindy's, PrepStar and The Sporting News website during his time in the business. He has used his networking and experience to break numerous high profile commitments. Sammy Batten

Sammy Batten has covered athletics at the University of North Carolina since 1982 when he helped document the Tar Heels run to Dean Smith's first national championship. A native of Goldsboro and 1976 graduate of Goldsboro High School, Batten spent two years at Louisburg College where he received an Associate of Arts degree before transferring to UNC. While at UNC, Batten was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and graduated with a degree from the School of Journalism in 1981. He has worked for a variety of publications since, including the Carolina Blue newspaper, The Robesonian in Lumberton and for the last 22 years at The Fayetteville Observer. As the Observer's college football writer, Batten was twice honored by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Assocation as North Carolina's Sportswriter of the Year (1998, 2002). Alex Conway

Alex Conway graduated from East Carolina University in 2011 with a degree in Journalism. Conway has spent the majority of his life living in North Carolina but spent a brief period living in Baltimore. No matter where he has gone Conway has intensely followed the ACC sports landscape and the North Carolina Tar Heels. A newcomer to the sports writing industry, Conway brings with him a fresh set of eyes when covering UNC athletics for TarHeelIllustrated.com. He has spent the majority of his young career free lancing for local community newspapers and writing on MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) for Examiner.com, and will be assisting THI with team and recruiting content.

Patrick O'Brien

Patrick O'Brien has been following UNC basketball and football for over 15 years. He grew up in Greensboro, where he attended Greensboro Day School. He then moved to Greenville (N.C.) to attended East Carolina University, graduating with a sports studies degree. While an undergraduate student, O'Brien covered ECU athletics for G-Vegas Magazine. He now resides in Raleigh, where he will be assisting Tar Heel Illustrated with UNC team coverage and recruiting. John Gwaltney

TarHeelIllustrated.com Director of Special Content John Gwaltney started CarolinaFanatics.com back in March, 1998 before merging with Carolina Blue of the Rivals Network in 2000. After 11 years with Carolina Blue & Carolina Blue Magazine John joined THI in January, 2012 to assist in covering Carolina basketball, football, baseball and recruiting while putting together special projects. Aaron Garrish

TarHeelIllustrated.com video contributor Aaron Garrish has been working as a videographer and editor since graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2001. His work has appeared nationally and internationally on Fox Sports, UNC-TV, The Discovery Channel & NBC. He began filming football and basketball recruits for the Rivals.com network in 2006, producing videos on current NBA standouts Kevin Love and Brandon Jennings, among others. His work also includes multiple former and current Tar Heel football and basketball players from their recruiting days. Aaron currently runs his own video production company, A.G. Kevin Roy

TarHeelIllustrated.com graphic designer Kevin Roy has been following UNC Athletics for more than 25 years and has been doing graphic design as a hobby for more than a decade. Originally from Jacksonville, N.C., Roy currently resides in Fayetteville, NC. He began working with Clint Jackson when Jackson launched his website, TarHeelRadar.com, and came to Rivals.com when the two sites merged. Roy has covered AAU basketball tournaments as a photographer for Rivals and has designed graphics and advertisements for Carolina Blue Magazine and its website. His full-time job is with the United States Department of the Treasury and will be doing work for TarHeelIllustrated.com in his spare time.
