Rice edges St. Pat's for McDonald's title

Rice knocked off St. Patrick of Elizabeth, 60-57, in the championship game of the McDonald's Classic.

Dorvell Carter paced the Raiders with 15 points and UConn-bound G Kemba Walker added 14 points and seven rebounds, according to a report by Joe Mattis of the Erie Times.

Kansas-bound F Quintrell Thomas of St. Patrick scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and North Carolina-bound G Dexter Strickland added 15 points. Jermel Jenkins scored 10.

Rice is now 14-2 and St. Patrick is 13-2.

Charles Fenner gave the Raiders a 49-46 lead with 5 minutes, 39 seconds left in the game, and Jeff Harris padded Rice's lead at 54-49 with 3:21 remaining.

"We have a lot of guys who contribute who come off the bench," Carter, who scored 12 points and both of his 3-pointers in the second half, told the Erie Times.

St. Patrick led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter, but couldn't hold the lead. Strickland scored three points in the second half.

"They are too good to not make a run at you," St. Patrick coach Kevin Boyle told the Erie Times. "They are quick and have a lot of energy. It's a tough one to swallow, but give them credit for playing hard and not mailing it in."
