Small DB makes big impression

The best of the best showed up to the Fort Worth Nike camp on Saturday.

Many of the players already hold offers from schools that have already seen what they can do.

However, one player in attendance held no offers, but plenty of confidence.

That player is Mesquite, Texas defensive back, Marcus Trice.

In fact the first thing the 5-foot-8, 170-pound Trice did upon arriving was to challenge a highly recruited receiver already holding offers, Keller Central's 6-foot-5, 208-pound Jarrod Darden.

Upon learning that Darden already held several offers, Trice told him that he was calling him out first in one-on-ones.

In fact it was the one-on-one drills that really set Trice apart from the rest of the defensive backs, but he felt good about his overall performance.

"I felt like I came out and worked hard throughout my drills," Trice said. "I feel like my fundamentals were pretty sound. I feel like I did my thing on my one-on-ones. I went up against a lot of the top guys. Some of them caught it, but I bounced back and made a lot of defensive plays. I feel like I showed people what I can do."

He certainly showed what he can do and he did it against a top level of competition.

"It was the best of the best. These guys didn't get invited here for no reason. There were a lot of good receivers and a lot of good defensive backs. I feel the level of competition was really high," Trice said.

Trice has already been hearing from several schools, but after this weekends performance, he may need a bigger mailbox.

"I've been getting mail from Kansas, Tulsa, North Texas, SMU and Iowa State," Trice said.

While he has been playing safety in high school, he is getting recruited as a cornerback for college.

Last season Trice collected 60 tackles, 14 pass break-ups and even came up with seven sacks.
