Cameron Jonas got quite a surprise two weeks ago, and it was a pretty good one.

The 3-star safety in the class of 2018 received an offer to play at North Carolina, even though he hadn’t yet been in contact with the Tar Heels. Yet, Carolina had been on his mind.

“(Running backs coach) DeAndre Smith told me and I was kind of shocked because I was thinking, what if I get offered from them, and it happened,” Jonas told THI.

Jonas was indeed surprised, though. But why? He also has offers Miami, Auburn, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech among many others, so naturally a program such as UNC might be interested.

“Never thought that they would be interested in me like this,” said Jonas, who is 6-2 and 187 pounds.

Jonas admits he doesn’t know a whole lot about Carolina, but wants to find out as much as he can quickly.

“I don't know much but plan on getting to know about them in the future and I know Michael Jordan went there,” he said.

The Jordan connection matters some here, it’s in part what increased Jonas’ awareness of the Tar Heels. That’s one reason why the Jordan Brand move was made.

“I never thought Jordan would actually have football accessories made for the team being a basketball player and all, but it's something new and I like it,” Jonas said.

Jonas plans on visiting UNC in June, likely for one of the Tar Heels’ day camps. His family is actually vacationing in North Carolina, so he may have an extended stay in Chapel Hill. He’s also been offered by N.C. State and East Carolina, so it’s likely he will visit one or both of those schools, too.

As of now, are there any leaders for Jonas’ services?

“I don't really have a pecking order yet, but I’m gonna make one when I get through the visits.”
