A New Day

The history of North Carolina's athletics program turns a page Friday with the hiring of Lawrence 'Bubba' Cunningham to replace outgoing UNC AD Dick Baddour.
As THI reported when it first learned about it on Thursday, an emergency session of the UNC Board of Trustees is scheduled for 9:00 am Friday morning, at which time Cunningham should be formally accepted as UNC's new Director of Athletics.

And then at 11:00 am, there will be a press conference in the Bowles Room of the Smith Center, where Cunningham will be formally introduced.
Cunningham is just the third man to be leading North Carolina's 28-sport athletics department in the last 30 years, as John Swofford held the post from 1981 to 1997, and Baddour from 1997 to the present.
It's a historic day at UNC, and it's an important day as the University looks to overcome the stain of the last 15 months, and the damage that has been done to the school's reputation.
Tar Heel Illustrated will be front and center at Friday's Cunningham press conference in Chapel Hill, so stay tuned for live updates and commentary.
