Brown Defends Team, Harshly Criticizes Doeren's Words

CHAPEL HILL – Mack Brown made his first public comments to the media Wednesday afternoon since his postgame press conference following North Carolina’s loss at rival NC State on November 25, and the harsh words were directed at Wolfpack Coach Dave Doeren.

Speaking to his team in the locker room after beating the Tar Heels 39-20, Doeren said, “Hey, you know it’s been 1,460 days since those pieces of shit beat us.”

His remarks quickly his social media but little backlash, until today.

Brown met with the media to discuss National Signing Day and offer some information about UNC’s class of 2024. But the Hall of Fame coach closed his brief eight-minute session by saying the following:

“In our last ballgame with a rival school, after the game, the head coach of that school called our players pieces of shit,” Brown said. “And I apologize for that language. But I’ve never heard something like that before, and I’m disappointed. I thought it was classless. It’s not true.

“Number one, we didn’t play well in the game, didn’t coach well in the game, that’s been very well documented. I get that. But you don’t call kids pieces of shit.

“I’ve addressed it with our team. I’ve apologized to them. These kids are one of the top academic groups in America. They got an award AFCA’s top15. They’ve won a Coastal Division, they’ve won a bunch of games, they’ve been to an Orange Bowl, been to five straight bowls, they represent us well, and from me speaking for them and their parents, they really didn’t appreciate being called a piece of shit. Never heard that before. Very, very disappointing.”

UNC is 8-4 and will face West Virginia in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, and State is 9-3 and will play Kansas State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl in Orlando.
