Benji Gosnell has been on North Carolina’s radar for some time.

Not only his he the younger brother of incoming freshman Stephen Gosnell, but Benji was offered by the Tar Heels last November after taking a visit to Chapel Hill.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound class of 2022 athlete who attends East Surry High School in Pilot Mountain, NC, has a bevy of offers, including from Penn State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida, Virginia Tech, and many others.

Even though Gosnell has strong connections to the program, he’s looking to build relationships with the coaches on his own and looks forward to building relationships as he moves forward.

“I speak with outside linebackers coach coach Jovan DeWitt about once and week or maybe even twice,” Gosnell told THI. “Dewitt’s a really cool guy and fun to talk to. Back during the season, I would speak with wide receivers coach Lonnie Galloway a ton at games and on the phone, me and him are good friends.”

Tar Heel Illustrated caught up with Gosnell to discuss UNC, his recruitment and how he has managed during the pandemic.

Here is the rest of the interview:

THI: What position are they evaluating you to play on the next level?

GOSNELL: “They’ve told me if I go there I can choose between TE or OLB, maybe even WR. But they’ve told me that they can see me playing OLB for them.”

THI: What have you been doing to stay in shape and get ready for your season during the shutdown?

GOSNELL: “I’ve been focusing on losing body fat by running miles and following that up my sprints. I’ve been catching balls with Stephen and (UNC freshman) Jefferson (Boaz). There’s a park near me where I can do calisthenic workouts, too, to maintain strength.”

THI: How much more can you do now with the restrictions being lifted some than you could for a while?

GOSNELL: “Well for a while, the field was closed and I couldn’t do any field work or run routes. But after phase 1, we could open the field again. Hopefully we’ll be able to start June 15 if our Superintendent lets us and then it’ll be great to put in work with teammates again. Yes of course, I think We’ll be good enough to take back the state title back home for sure.”

THI: With the dead period probably ending over the next month, do you plan on making a trip to UNC and what other schools do you want to get to as well?

GOSNELL: “I definitely would like to get up there to see a practice if that’ll be possible. Mainly to see Stephen and how he’s doing with everything. I’m also wanting to get up to Ohio State, Clemson and Penn State sometime definitely.”
