No. 41: Cindy Werley

Perhaps the greatest field hockey player ever at UNC, Werley was a three-time All-America, a two-time ACC Player of the Year and a two-time Honda Sports Award winner in field hockey, which goes to the National Player of the Year.

Werley was the MVP of three ACC Tournaments, was named All-NCAA Tournament three times and twice led the Tar Heels to the national championship in 1996 and 1997.

She is UNC’s all-time leader in goals (94 in 90 games), fifth in assists (44), the leader in points (212), hold the school record with 36 goals in a season and has the No2. 1, 2 and 8 single-season marks for points.

Internationally, she was a member of the U.S. Olympic team in 1996 and was a key member of the U.S. team in six major international competitions as a member of the U.S. team from 1994-2000. Three times the United States team medaled in those events.

Werley was not on UNC’s 1995 NCAA champion because she was with the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, twice she competed in the Pan American Games

UNC was 65-5 during the three seasons she played.

She also won the Patterson medal at UNC and is one of two field hockey players at UNC to have her jersey retired.
