North Carolina defensive tackle Carl Smalls was shot to death in South Carolina early Saturday morning, UNC officials said Saturday.

Smalls’ father, also named Carl, informed Carolina head coach John Bunting of his son’s death early Saturday afternoon.
“Our hearts and prayers are with Carl’s family as they deal with this tragedy,” Bunting said in a statement. “It’s a senseless end to a young man’s life, and I can’t begin to think of the pain his family is going through at this time. We will be there for the family in whatever way we can. We will be sure to have counselors available for our players as they also feel this loss.”
Smalls played in seven games this season, recording four tackles. He was suspended for the last two games of the season and was scheduled to discuss his status with Bunting during the offseason.
Police had no suspects as of Saturday afternoon.
