Desmond Hubert has had his favorites in the recruiting process for quite some time. The 6-10, 200 lb senior post player from New Egypt (NJ) High, however, now has a new school in the picture.
It's the North Carolina Tar Heels.
"They've really started to recruit me now," said the defensive standout who is one of the top unsigned big men left in the country.
"They have been up to see me twice in two weeks now. Once last week and once again this week. Roy Williams told me that he wanted to come see a game too."
Hubert, who averaged 19 points, 10 rebounds and nine blocks last season as a junior, doesn't have a set date to make an announcement, but he does seem pretty sure of his core group of schools that he will pick from, when it eventually comes time to picking a college program.
"Maryland is up there. I am looking at Wake Forest, Villanova, UNC and Georgia Tech," he said.
While some schools will try and influence Hubert's decision to allow the Tar Heels into the picture this late in the game, Hubert is keeping an open mind to the process, and he told TarHeelIllustrated.com that the Tar Heels were actually recruiting him last year.
"They missed on a guy that I think they thought they were going to get in Cody Zeller, so they've started to come look at me. But they actually were recruiting me prior to the summer of my junior year, so it was something that dropped off a little bit and now it's back."
"Any time North Carolina calls you, you have to listen to what they have to say. I'm open to it," he continued.
On the hardwood, Hubert is widely known as a defensive minded big guy who rejects and alters a lot of shots, due to his length, bouncy athleticism and timely approach.
On the offensive side of the ball, however, the slender big man is work in progress.
It's something that he agrees with and he's planning to focus on it during this season.
"I know I have to work on my offense. Just trying to shoot it better and work on my post moves. I know I can work on my handle too. Just my shooting and my post moves though mainly," he said.
Hubert doesn't have a time frame right now and seems content on hearing UNC's pitch to him as well as maintaining his existing relationships with Maryland, Villanova, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech.
