UNC-Virginia Tech Postgame Notes

CHAPEL HILL--- North Carolina had a tremendous all-around outing Saturday afternoon as they outlasted Virginia Tech 48-34 in Kenan Stadium.

UNC-VT POSTGAME NOTES

---Carolina's 48 points marks the first time UNC has scored 45 or more points in back-to-back games since 1993.

---The 48 points scored by Carolina are the most by either team in the history of the series and the most Virginia Tech has allowed in a conference game since joining the ACC. Carolina's previous high against Tech in an ACC contest was 24 in a 2004 loss and the previous highest total for either team was 42 points in the 1998 Gator Bowl. The 34 points were the most by the Hokies in a loss to the Tar Heels. The 82 combined points makes today the highest scoring game in series history (previous record was 60 points in a 39-21 UNC victory in 1930).

---The 48 points were the most allowed by Virginia Tech since LSU posted 48 points in 2007.

---UNC's 28 first half points were the sixth-most allowed by Virginia Tech in school history and the 48 points in the game equal the seventh-most allowed by the Hokies.

---Carolina accumulated 533 yards of total offense, the second consecutive week with at least 500 yards. The Tar Heels gained 575 last week against Idaho.

---Carolina rushed for 399 yards, the first time the Tar Heels have gone over 300 rushing yards as a team since 2004 (341 vs. William and Mary). The 339 rushing yards are the third-most ever allowed by Virginia Tech.

---Tailback Giovani Bernard rushed for a career-high 262 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown. He is the first Tar Heel to rush for 200-plus yards in a game since Ronnie McGill rushed for 244 yards against Wake Forest in 2003. The 262-yard mark is the fifth-highest in UNC single-game history and the most ever gained against Virginia Tech in any game.

---The 11.4 yards per carry for Bernard had three rushes for minus-3 yards. Over the last three quarters, Bernard has 20 carries for 265 yards.

---In one stretch of 11 carries from the second to the third quarter, Bernard had nine carries for at least 10 yards, including two carries of 51 yards or more. He averaged 19.5 yards during the 11-carry stretch. Bernard finished the day with 10 carries for at least 10 yards.

---Wide receiver Sean Tapley caught two passes for 43 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown in the third quarter. He also returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. It was Tapley's first kickoff return touchdown and the first for Carolina since T.J. Thorpe took a kickoff back 100 yards at Clemson in 2011. Tapley now has four touchdowns on the season.

---The kickoff return touchdown by Tapley was the first allowed by Virginia Tech since 1993. The Hokies had gone an FBS record 237 consecutive games without allowing a kickoff return touchdown.

---Quarterback Bryn Renner passed Jason Stanicek for fourth place on the UNC career passing yards list with 4,516 yards. He also moved past Ronald Curry on the career completions list, and now ranks fourth all-time at Carolina with 361.

---Renner recorded his first rushing touchdown of the season, a four-yard scoring play in the first quarter.

---Tailback A.J. Blue carried eight times for 57 yards and a pair of touchdowns, his fifth and sixth rushing touchdowns of the year. Blue scored on a 1-yard plunge in the second quarter and a 13-yard run in the third quarter.

---Linebacker Travis Hughes made perhaps Carolina's biggest defensive play of the day when he stripped Michael Holmes and returned the ball eight yards. UNC would score on the ensuing drive when Renner hit Tapley for a 19-yard touchdown.

---Place kicker Casey Barth converted all six of his PAT attempts on the day. Carolina has made 153 consecutive extra points, including a school record 115 in a row by Barth. He also extended his school record for career made field goals to 60 with his 44-yarder in the third quarter and a 40-yarder in the fourth quarter. The 44-yarder was his longest of the season.

---Offensive guard Jonathan Cooper started his 41st career game Saturday---most among active offensive linemen in the ACC.

---The touchdown allowed by Carolina in the first quarter was the first scored by an opponent at Kenan Stadium in 2012, snapping a streak of 12 straight quarters to start the year.

---Virginia Tech became the first Tar Heel opponent of the season to score in the third quarter when Demitri Knowles returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown. It was the first kickoff return against Carolina since 2007 (Wake Forest).

---Virginia Tech entered Saturday's contest averaging 149.6 yards rushing per game and were held to just 40 yards on 25 carries.

---Cornerback Tim Scott had his team-leading third interception of the season. He also had six catches and two pass breakups.
