What a great day to be a Tar Heel. To be honest, EVERYDAY is a great day to be a Tar Heel. On this day, before the Heels even took the field against Illinois, the Blue Devils and the Wolfpack had already suffered, as Jim McKay of ABC's Wide World of Sports would call it "the agony of defeat". Tar Heels fans everywhere consider this "The Perfect Day"!
The game started against Illinois on Saturday night and after the first few minutes, most Tar Heel Fans everywhere were saying, "here we go again". Well, that's what I was saying. The defense was having assignment difficulties and Mitch Trubisky had, what I call "happy feet" in the pocket, which is not a good thing. The offensive line struggled early and often and there were very few running lanes. Then Mitch Trubisky used those "happy feet" to break off a couple of impressive runs and along with T.J. Logan's "happy feet", the Tar Heels really never looked back.
Coach Fedora talks about having to make adjustments during a game and this was never more true than on Saturdaynight. With Illinois having a new coaching staff and no college film to look at, the Tar Heels seemed to muddle their way through the 1st quarter defensively until they were able to figure out what Lovie Smith's team was trying to do. I do have a very important question before we go forward, "Who names their kid Lovie, really"! From the 2nd quarter on, "Lovie's" defense was full of "love" allowing the Carolina offense to basically do as they wanted and as often as they wanted for the next 3 quarters.
On a different subject. Is it too much to ask for broadcasters everywhere to do some homework before the game on the correct names of the players. The Big Ten Network (BTN) announcers called Marquise Williams, Marquise "Lee" all night long when talking about Mitch Trubisky waiting his turn behind Marquise "Lee" at QB. Since I'm at most games, I don't have to listen to these clowns. When I do watch a game live on TV, I long for the days of "turning down the sound" and listening to Woody!
Now that I got that off my chest, let's talk about a few players that stood out to me.
RYAN SWITZER: Did Ryan have a great game against Illinois? No he didn't! On my twitter feed (shameless plug) @tarheelsportsphotos, people were bashing Ryan for the botched punt return more than was necessary. Was it a bad decision? Yes! But this young man has done so many great things since he's been at Carolina. These people that were critical, sometimes to the point of just being STUPID, should just relax. Ryan will help us win many more games than he will lose for us! Those of us who have not ever made mistakes, please raise your hand! Andrew, put your hand down (lol)!
TOMON FOX: When I first saw this young man a few years ago when he committed, I just knew he was going to be a "stud" at Carolina. To me, last night was his coming out party after two games. Playing because of injuries to key players in front of him, he's getting the opportunity to play and play a lot. Last night, Tomon had 4 tackles and recorded his 1st sack. Believe me, with more weight and experience, those numbers will continue to rise. Tar Heel fans, keep your eyes on #12 on defense!
NAZ JONES: This young man was a beast on Saturday. Mikey Bart was quoted after the game as saying, "Naz played a great game. There were a few times I was going to make a tackle, and Naz came out of no where to get the stop". I think that says it all! If he continues to play at this rate, he's a sure fire 1st Team All-ACC Member!
MIKEY BART & ANDRE SMITH: To me, these two young men are the "Heart and Soul" of the Tar Heel Defense. This is not to say there aren't other fine players on the defense, but these two young men are consistently giving you everything they have on every play. If you watch every defensive play last night, you will see one or both of them at the ball. They refused to be blocked and refuse to be stopped until the whistle blows!
Finally, a plea to Tar Heel Fans everywhere. Show up at Kenan Stadium this Saturday afternoon. These you men deserve our support. We need to have Kenan Stadium full as James Madison comes to town for the beat down of their lives. We need to be loud early and often. GO HEELS!
