UNC has another big game this weekend with No. 25 Virginia Tech and its revamped offense coming to Kenan Stadium for a game that could decide who eventually wins the ACC Coastal Division.
As of now, it appears the game will go on at 3:30 Saturday as scheduled, and Chapel Hill may even escape rain and much wind if Hurricane Matthew continues recent projected paths.
Here are 5 keys for the Tar Heels (4-1, 2-0 ACC) to defeat the Hokies (3-1, 1-0):
Contain Evans – The defense has made some progress of late against the run, but it’s still a troubled spot among many for the unit. Dealing with Virginia Tech QB Jerod Evans, however, will be a new task for this group. They’ve taken on three of the top conventional tailbacks in the nation so far in Nick Chubb, James Conner, and Dalvin Cook, but Evans is a scrambler, more elusive, and will run at any time for big gains, even on what start out as pass plays. Containing him with their eyes and then bodies will be huge for the D.
Establish The Run – The win over FSU last weekend was a great example of how getting a ground game going early can help the rest of the offense later, especially when the deep ball is taken away, which is what happened versus the Seminoles. The Heels ran for 142 yards in the first half, and while they did very little after halftime, this help set up the offense the rest of the game, Mitch Trubisky said. Doing so against Bud Foster’s renowned unit will be a vial factor in keeping the offense humming.
Kicking Game – If it’s wet and windy, use of the kicking game and its effectiveness will be big keys in the game’s outcome from kickoffs to punting to extra points and field goal attempts. This is where the field can be flipped because of mistakes and even directly lead to points. The Heels have been pretty strong in this area, and need to be again on Saturday regardless of the elements.
Turnovers – The defense has forced just three turnovers on the season, all of which have been fumbles, and now would be a good time to start getting more than one in a game. With the run defense issues, it’s unlikely the secondary is going to change its approach of recent weeks, but a pick would really lift up the unit, and adding a fumble with the offense not turning it over would be huge in this game.
Mitch Being Mitch – So far, the junior quarterback has been outstanding completing 76 percent of his pass attempts with 13 TDs and no interceptions, but he hasn’t faced a great defense yet, not even Georgia’s. The Hokies are No. 9 overall nationally in total defense, the highest rated UNC opponent to date is Illinois at No. 50. Tech is No. No. 25 allowing 113.5 yards rushing per game and No. 8 in pass efficiency defense (93.72). Trubisky will get his stiffest challenge to date, yet if he continues to play as he has, or even close to it, the Heels will win.
