Head coach John Bunting announced that top running back Ronnie McGill is “doubtful” for the game and that punter David Wooldridge is suspended for “conduct detrimental to the team” at his weekly press conference Tuesday afternoon.
A sophomore, McGill severely sprained his right ankle in UNC’s 34-13 win over Georgia Tech last Saturday. McGill, who has picked up 245 rushing yards on a team-high 41 carries, missed almost the entire second half, but Bunting said after the game he “didn’t think the injury was serious.” That changed after trainers evaluated the injury Monday night and reportedly placed the ankle into a protective boot.
“Ronnie looks doubtful,” Bunting said. “He is doubtful for practice tomorrow so therefore he is doubtful for the game in my mind. We are going to get Jacque Lewis ready.”
A senior, Lewis is coming off a career-high 161 yards on the ground and two touchdowns against the Jackets. Classmate Chad Scott, who has 168 rushing yards, is expected to share most of the carries with Lewis. True freshman Vince Wilson, who has yet to play, may also be part of the rotation at tailback.
“We are going to get Vince ready to play,” Bunting said.
Lewis thinks he is prepared to handle more of the rushing load.
“I’m ready to do whatever the coaches ask me,” Lewis said. “If they need me to play the whole game I will be ready to do it.”
Wooldridge ranked fourth in the ACC in punting average (44.4 yards). He will be replaced by freshman walk on John Choate who has yet to punt a ball in a game.
