CHAPEL HILL – Mitch Trubisky or Mitchell Trubisky, to whom does the name matter?

If you ask Trubisky, he says it matters greatly to his mother, and that’s good enough for him. But, to the former UNC quarterback, who is expected to be the first player at his position taken in next month’s NFL draft, it really doesn’t matter.

“Someone (NFL team) asked what my mom preferred, and that was the answer, so Mitch or Mitchell, you guys are welcome to use either one,” Trubisky said Tuesday after UNC’s Pro day. “If you’re close to me and my mother, she prefers Mitchell. It doesn’t bother me if you call me Mitch, because a lot of people call me Mitch, including my teammates.

“I think they both sound good, it doesn’t matter.”

Trubisky said all along “Mitchell” is what his mother has preferred. Never did he imagine so much hoopla would swell about his name when he told a team it’s fine to call him by the name his mother prefers.

“I was trying to do my mom a favor, and it actually made her happy,” he said, smiling. “The media whirlwind it’s picked up to, my was happy. So, if I can do that for my mom I don’t really care.”

UNC coach Larry Fedora said Trubisky actually requested he be called by his full first name several years ago.

“Oh yeah, when he first got here,” Fedora said. “I called him Mitchell a lot, actually. But I do that a lot with our guys, because a lot of them don’t like to be called by their full name or their proper name I do it just to bother them.”

Trubisky was asked Tuesday if he liked a third name, “Money Making Mitch.”

He replied, “I can live with that,” smiling.

But Mitch or Mitchell, Trubisky doesn’t care, unless, of course, his mother is around.
