The Lowdown: UNC vs. Iona
NO. 22 NORTH CAROLINA (7-3, 1-0) VS. IONA (5-4, 1-0)
The Tar Heels had nothing but good memories of Madison Square Garden until they went up against Iona there for the Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival.
The Gaels got the upset win, and Carolina had a terrible loss, with Sean May suffering a stress fracture that will keep him out 8-10 weeks.
KEY STATS
• The Tar Heels shot a season-low 32.1 percent on field goals.
• Carolina also turned the ball over 23 times, the most this season.
• Iona hit just two three-pointers in the game on nine attempts.
TOP UNC PLAYER
Raymond Felton’s shooting was off (he was 3 of 10 from the floor), but he played the best all-around game in the loss, notching 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
TOP IONA PLAYER
Courtney Fields was money from the field, connecting on two-thirds of his shots, scoring 18 points and owning the paint, especially once Sean May hit the bench. He did it on defense, too, notching four steals and a block.
COOLEST PLAYS
• Raymond Felton helped David Noel show off his hops when he tossed a back-door alley-oop that Noel slammed down with two hands early in the first half.
• Maceo Wofford capped Iona’s 15-1 run by just getting lost behind the UNC defense where Steve Burtt found him for a finely executed backdoor layup.
TURNAROUND
The defense was not there in the second half, as Iona went from shooting 31 percent in the first 20 minutes to 57.7 percent after the break.
NEEDS WORK
Simply hanging on to the basketball can mean the difference between winning and losing against a less-talented opponent like Iona. Giving away the ball is like giving away points, and the Tar Heels can’t afford to do it.
TIDBITS
• The loss to Iona snapped a five-game win streak at Madison Square Garden for the Tar Heels, who had not been defeated there since a 1993 overtime loss to Massachusetts in the semifinal of the Preseason NIT.
• Carolina started four freshmen against Iona, the first time that has happened in school history. Iona also started four freshmen.
•The Tar Heels were at their season-worst in shooting (32.1 percent) and turnovers (23).
•Other former UNC basketball players to suffer the same injury as Sean May include J.R. Reid, Brian Bersticker and Marion Jones.
QUOTABLE
• Matt Doherty, on playing without Sean May: "You just have to make adjustments. Between (Damion Grant and Byron Sanders) hopefully we’ll get some good minutes. We’ll have to experiment with those things and hopefully people will step up."
• Doherty, on his team’s performance: "We rebounded well, but other than that, we weren’t very sharp."
• Sean May, on his foot pain: "I was struggling walking around the house after the FSU game. After the game (the pain) was unbelievable."
• Raymond Felton, on treacherous air travel: "It really was a bad week. We thought the plane was going to crash."
