Tre’ Shaw, a 4-star cornerback from Ellenwood, GA, announced Monday he will play college football at North Carolina.
A 5-11, 178-pound supremely gifted athlete, the Cedar Grove High School star chose the Tar Heels over his other three final schools, South Carolina, Clemson and Auburn.
Technically, Shaw is the second defensive back in UNC’s class of 2017, though Caleb Rozar, who committed after the Freak Show last month, is a defensive back and wide receiver and Carolina has recruited him as an athlete. UNC took six defensive backs in it class of 2016.
For Shaw, UNC offered the three things that he’s been consistent about throughout his recruitment.
“I'm looking for a school that can help develop me into a man, and help me reach my ultimate goal of making it to the NFL,” he recently told THI. “I want to get a degree somewhere that will help me get a job if football doesn't work.”
UNC obviously was the right fit.
“It's a great school and has a great football program,” he said.
On the field, Shaw sees UNC’s defensive schemes and the direction the unit is taking with its second-year staff on that side of the ball, and the match suits him nicely.
“I would fit well in their scheme for defense,” he said.
Shaw, who attended UNC's summer camp a year ago and was also at the Duke=UNC basketball game in February, is the 15th member of the class of 2017. Defensive backs coach Charlton Warren was the primary recruiter for Shaw.
