Barnwell, SC, offensive lineman Marcus McKethan committed to North Carolina on Wednesday afternoon.

Listed at 6-5 and 301 by Rivals.com, a source very close to McKethan said he's actually now 6-6 and 328 pounds. The class of 2017 prospect from Barnwell High School currently has no star rating by Rivals.com and his only other offer is from N.C. State. A couple of reports say McKethan has also been offered by East Carolina. South Carolina has been in regular contact and may also offer. Over the last several months, his presence on staff's radars has significantly increased.

He’s visited South Carolina four times, including for the Gamecocks’ spring game, and has been to Georgia a couple of times, most recently for one of its camps. There, he was noted as one of the most intriguing performers, and that UGa coaches had clearly taken notice of him.

McKethan attended UNC’s camp session last Friday and while he was a bit slow at times and raw, he was also mobile enough and showed nice quickness off the ball and with the use of his hands that the staff was intrigued even more. They were pushing him and he didn’t relent, and they loved that. Clearly, his upside, and the positives attributed to his performance very much outweighed any negatives.

The Barnwell Warhorses went 6-5 last season, averaging 31.9 points per game.

An all-state discus thrower in track and field, McKethan won the South Carolina Class AA discus title with a toss of 151 feet, 6 inches. The next closest came 10 feet shorter than McKethan.

McKethan, by the way, is athletic enough that he played on Barnwell's basketball team and was a regular in the rotation.
