Northeastern (NC) class of 2019 3-star athlete J.R. Walker is one of the top prospects in the state and thus far has picked up offers from Virginia Tech, Georgia, South Carolina, N.C. State, Duke, East Carolina and North Carolina.

The 6-1, 202-pound quarterback and safety, mostly, also excels at some other positions. Wherever he’s needed, Walker will play.

"Wide receiver, quarterback, cornerback, free safety and running back are the positions,” he told THI.

UNC is one of the programs that sticks out to Walker, in large part due to his strong connection with Tar Heels running backs coach DeAndre Smith.

"We talk every day, and he is a cool coach," Walker said.

Right now, the way things are going UNC projects Walker as a versatile defensive back who has a chance to line up in multiple packages.

"Free safety or cornerback, that's what they are recruiting me at,” Walker said.

Walker visited Chapel Hill for the third time last Saturday, and despite the outcome of the game he came away feeling positive about how the visit went and the direction Carolina football is heading.

"It was really good," he said. "The game atmosphere was great as well. I feel like they are going to get some young guys to step up for them and get the team back right.”

He is looking to visit Virginia Tech sometime next month, then possibly could schedule some other visits soon after.
