Cam Johnson Commits To UNC

Cam Johnson confirmed to THI on Tuesday afternoon he has committed to transfer to North Carolina where he will play basketball for the Tar Heels.

Johnson played two full seasons at Pittsburgh after redshirting as a freshman, and as a graduate student, normally he would have two years of eligibility, but Pitt has a rule that prevents graduate transfers from playing immediately at other ACC schools.

Johnson is willing to roll the dice on getting a waiver, and there's a degree of confidence something may happen on his behalf.

“That part is still in progress," he said.

Johnson, who is 6-8, averaged 11.9 points per game at Pittsburgh last season, converting 44.7 percent of his shot attempts from the field, including 41.5 percent from beyond the arc.

He was 78-188 from 3-point range, including shooting 7-12 in two games versus the Tar Heels. In fact, he was 6-9 in the Smith Center, a game UNC barely hung on to win. Johnson finished with 24 points that night.

He also totaled 22 in a win over Syracuse and 20 in the final game of the season, a loss to Virginia in the ACC Tournament. Johnson scored 15 or more points in 13 of Pitt’s 33 games, but also failed to reach double figures in 13 contests, including five times finishing with 5 points or less.

Granted, two of Johnson’s teammates, Michael Young and Jamel Artis, were among the ACC’s top scorers, combining to score 37.8 points per game, which was nearly 52 percent of the Panthers’ scoring. So, there weren’t always a lot of scoring opportunities for him.

Johnson averaged 4.5 rebounds per contest to go with 2.3 assists. His high rebound game was also his high assist outing, a 17-point, 11-rebound and 7-assist performance in a mid-February win over Virginia Tech.
